“God made two great lights — the greater light to govern the day and the lesser light to govern the night. He also made the stars,” (Genesis 1:16).
God’s word is a love letter of encouragement. There are times the words fall on a soft and supple heart. At other times, the words taste like sweet honey. Other times, they fall like a replenishing rain, and still, they are forever a light to guide our paths.
I’ve recently had a few difficult days tied to various things that are ongoing. Part of my difficulty is being rushed, my sleep schedule being disrupted and my Bible study time being impacted. There is no substitute for time with God, and the soul, spirit and body recognize that.
I remember looking in a body of water recently and seeing something that reminded me of God’s presence. I was on a pier looking over the edge to see the water lapping against its supporting leg. At the jutting corner, the light mingled with the dirt and algae to make a swirling center of what looked like energy. From that center, rays shot out in long, thin lines. It looked like the surface of the sun.
That image reminded me of our Creator. He is the center, swirling with energy, purpose and life. From him come rays that pierce the darkness, His children. You and me. The swirling center was in the water and so were the rays, but they didn’t look like the rest of the water. Much like God’s presence is very much in the world, as are we, yet we don’t look the same as the world.
I took my dogs outside this morning to have a potty break before I began my day, and the moon was a brilliant grayish white, full and starkly different than the black, early-morning sky. I remembered the words spoken in the Bible: “look up,” “I lift my eyes,” and “fix your mind on things above.”
I then thought of the song “Look Up Child” by Lauren Daigle, which includes the following lyrics:
“Where are You now When darkness seems to win? Where are You now When the world is crumbling? Oh, I hear You say, ‘Look up, child…’ Where are You now? When all I feel is doubt? Oh, where are You now When I can’t figure it out? Oh, I I hear You say… ‘Look up, child…’ You’re not threatened by the war, you’re not shaken by the storm. I know You’re in control. Even in our suffering, even when it can’t be seen, I know You’re in control. Oh, I hear You say, ‘Look up, child.’”
God never leaves us. His promises to abide with us, to lead and guide us, to be our light and life will never fail. We just need to look up.
