The Adams County Fair recognized Rick and Patty Crawford as the 2024 Outstanding Fair Supporters, honoring decades of service, leadership, and dedication that have strengthened the fair and inspired the entire community.
In the early 1990s, Rick and Patty envisioned a better future for the fair’s swine exhibitors and set out to build a modern facility that could serve youth for generations. What began as an ambitious idea quickly grew into a countywide effort. Their determination rallied the Adams County Agricultural Society, local businesses, and countless junior fair families behind the cause.
As support grew, it became clear that additional funding would be needed to bring the project to life. The Crawfords worked closely with the Adams County Pork Producers to secure a loan, bridging the gap between donations and construction costs. The loan was steadily repaid thanks to the success of the Pork Producers’ food booth at the fair—a project that became a hallmark of community involvement.
In 1994, the food booth moved into its long-term home when the old scale house was renovated to accommodate it. Patty Crawford stepped up to coordinate every aspect of the operation, teaming up with the Adams County Cattlemen to expand the volunteer workforce. She organized schedules for 4-H clubs and FFA chapters and handled the countless administrative details needed to keep the booth running seamlessly. Her tireless efforts helped create a warm, welcoming space that fair visitors returned to year after year.
Rick Crawford, meanwhile, introduced the creative “Pig Pen Club,” inviting supporters to make a $100 donation in exchange for a brass nameplate displayed on a pen. Many families participated to honor or remember loved ones, creating a lasting display of community support and pride that continues to line the barn today.
Thanks to Rick and Patty’s vision and hard work, the swine barn has stood strong for over 30 years, housing thousands of hogs and serving as a place where young people learn responsibility, sportsmanship, and the value of teamwork. Their efforts have helped shape not only the fairgrounds themselves but the experiences and opportunities available to youth throughout Adams County.
The Adams County Fair community is proud to celebrate Rick and Patty Crawford for their extraordinary contributions. Their legacy of dedication and generosity is woven into the very fabric of the fair, ensuring it remains a place of learning, connection, and tradition for many years to come.
