Despite a cool, damp spring in the Ohio Valley, the Ohio Tobacco Museum successfully planted and transplanted its annual demonstration crop on the museum grounds this summer. On August 9, the museum hosted its traditional topping demonstration, which drew a strong turnout from community members.

The next step in the crop’s journey, cutting and housing, is scheduled for Saturday, August 30 at 11 a.m., weather permitting. Museum organizers encourage both longtime farmers and newcomers alike to take part. “If you’d like to give it a try—or see if you still have it—join us on August 30,” the report invites.

The museum also expressed its gratitude to several individuals and organizations for their support. Special thanks were extended to Martha Fithen, Cindy Kratzer, and the Brown County Master Gardeners, who have been instrumental in maintaining the museum’s landscaping and flower beds. Martha and Cindy have also committed to ongoing upkeep of the grounds. In addition, thanks went out to David Campbell for arranging mowing services through Jerry Jones, ensuring the museum grounds remain tidy and welcoming.

This summer, the museum also benefited from the help of Cole Watters, a young man from Adams County who has served as a docent as part of his FFA project.

In addition to its living history demonstrations, the museum is offering a limited edition keepsake: engraved pocket knives handcrafted by Tim Scott of Manchester. Knives can be purchased during museum hours or by contacting a board member via email or Facebook Messenger.

Looking ahead, visitors can expect to see ongoing improvements to the facility, including air conditioning replacement, fresh exterior trim paint, and new display updates inside the museum.

The museum, a nonprofit organization run entirely by volunteers, continues to rely on community support. While admission is free, donations are welcome, and there are many ways to get involved—whether by volunteering a skill, purchasing from the museum’s Amazon wish list, or simply following and sharing its Facebook page.
