It’s somewhat unfamiliar territory for the Manchester Greyhounds football program. For the first time since 2015, the varsity Hounds are 2-=0 to begin the season, under the guidance of head coach Justin Schmitz. After blanking Fayetteville at home 12-0 in their opener, the Greyhounds went on the road last Friday night and picked up their second victory, a convincing win over the New Miami Vikings.
Manchester made an early statement on Friday at New Miami, taking a 16-0 lead after the first quarter. The Scoring began when Greyhounds quarterback Amiilion Brown fired a touchdown pass to tight end Dylon Fite. The two-point conversion run by Levi Hargis made it 8-0.
The Hounds’ defense has been more than stout through two games and after that first offensive score, the “D” came up big with a Joel Blythe interception That turnover led to a scoring run by Hargis, who also added another two-point conversion and after one, the visitors were up by two scores.
The Vikings answered with a score but a failed two-point try to make it 16-6 at halftime and the score remained there until late in the fourth quarter when the Manchester defense made a game-clinching play. Junior defensive lineman Remington Hayslip scooped up a New Miami fumble and rumbled 60 yards for the score. Blythe took the two-point run across and the Greyhounds had sealed the deal on their second consecutive victory.
“The boys played their guts out tonight,” said Coach Schmitz after the win.
The Hounds will put their perfect mark on the line this Friday night in the second of three straight road games as they travel to Franklin Furnace Green to face the 0-1 Bobcats in a 7 p.m. kickoff.
