News Release

The family of Susan Hattan Harper has announced that West Union High School senior Makenna Armstrong has been awarded the Susan Hattan Harper Memorial Scholarship. The scholarship is a $5,000 award to pursue higher education.

Armstong, the daughter of Matthew and Mandy Armstrong, plans to attend Brigham Young University to study Psychology. She was chosen as the scholarship recipient based on her exemplary academic achievements, extracurricular and community activities and essays.

“As a young child, I dreamt of working with and helping people in need,” said Armstrong in her scholarship essay. “As a counseling psychologist, I would research specialized therapy work, counsel individuals, diagnose mental health issues, and treat serious psychological symptoms.”

The Susan Hattan Harper Memorial Scholarship honors Susan Harper, a graduate of West Union High School class of 1970 and long-time teacher at West Union Elementary. Mrs. Harper taught hundreds of children during her 30+ year career in education and mentor several students in extracurricular activities.

“One day, I hope to have a fraction of the passion and love Susan had for her career, traveling, and facing life’s challenges head on,” said Armstong.

Mr. Keith Harper, also a long-time educator at West Union Junior High, presented the scholarship to the deserving student and shared a little bit about Mrs. Harper and their lives together growing up and working in Adams County.

The Susan Hattan Harper Memorial Scholarship is an annual award presented to a graduate of West Union High School who plans to pursue their education at a four-year college or university.
