The 21st Draft Horse, Mule, and Pony Field Days are scheduled for October 1 and 2. The event occurs at Grooms Glen Dale Park, 2915 Fawcett Road, six miles south of Peebles. Glenna Roush Grooms, a seventh generation native, who passed away in 2020, and her husband Dale dedicated a 20-acre spot for the activities.

A draft horse is a workhorse. According to Wikipedia, the many breeds “share common traits of strength, patience, and a docile temperament which made them indispensable to generations of pre-industrial farmers.”

Dale and Glenna Grooms owned draft horses for over 40 years. A Crossroads article describes Glenna as loving horses as a child. She stated, “I had no idea that, when I grew up, I would be back on a farm with draft horses like the horses I enjoyed so much as a little girl.” Her husband, Dale, is one of the founders of the Southern Ohio Draft Association, which began over 40 years ago in Brown County.

Tammy Crothers, a former co-worker of Glenna, said she was like Glenna’s “adopted daughter.” She shared that the event brings enjoyment for adults and children and “draws a good crowd.”

The Christian Missionary Fellowship will serve food on both days. There is no admission charge, but donations are appreciated. Don’t forget your lawn seating. Don’t hesitate to contact Dale Grooms at (937) 544-3123 (day) or (937) 587-3293 (evening) for more information.
