A recent graduate of West Union High School, Carson McFarland, otherwise known as McFur, hopes to produce music, “until (he) can’t anymore.”
“I’ve had an interest in music for probably my whole life,” said McFarland in an interview with The Defender. “I started playing drums and singing at a really young age.” This passion led him to become involved in music at school.
This year, Carson played Cain (son of Adam) and Japhet (son of Noah) in WUHS’s “Children of Eden”, a two-act musical based on stories taken from the biblical Book of Genesis. Carson was also a member of the West Union High School Band, where he played in the percussion section.
McFarland will be going to Ohio State University in the fall, where he plans to major in Business Marketing. “After I graduate with my degree in that,” says Carson, I want to attend either Full Sail University or something similar to pursue a degree in Music/Audio Engineering.”
He also said it’s likely that he’ll be trying out for the Men’s Glee Club at OSU.
When asked about the recording process for his own music, and where that process has taken him, Carson had this to say, “I started out recording in our high school studio, just for fun, and I posted a few songs. But now, I have a home studio.”
Under the stage name McFur, Carson has released two albums and three singles this year.
“What I usually do is – my beat producer sends me a beat, and I just kind of freestyle over it. Put something together. I met a kid on Instagram from Texas – his name’s Mzrt. He does all of my beats, and he’s really talented. Shoutout to Mzrt – I don’t know what I’d do without him!”
“Ever since I started doing music, I’ve kind of seen how everyone wants to help each other out, and push each other,” Carson continued. He adds that his support here in West Union is strong.
“The local support, especially with it being a small community, is crazy. All of the people that come out for the performances, concerts, even just supporting my music – it’s overwhelming.”
Carson’s music is available on Apple Music, Spotify, Youtube, Google Play, and Soundcloud.
