The Young Memorial Scholarship is an academic/athletic scholarship that honors the lives of David and Mark Young.
The 2019 recipients of the Young Memorial Scholarships are North Adams High School’s Grace McDowell and West Union High School’s Conner Campbell.
The Recipients
Graduating with Honors, Grace was the recipient of the Beta Scholarship, the Maurice Thatcher Scholarship, the Seaman Life Squad Scholarship, the Educational Diversity Scholarship from Northern Kentucky University and the Lion’s Club Scholarship. She is the Beta Secretary, the National Honor Society Treasurer, and Class President for her Senior Class.
In basketball, Grace was selected as the Wendy’s High School Heisman, McDonald’s Holiday Classic MVP, All-SHAC for two years, First Team All-District, Honorable-Mention All-State and Southeast Ohio All-District Second Team. She will be attending Northern Kentucky University in the fall, majoring in Athletic Training while pursuing a doctorate in Physical Therapy. Grace is the daughter of Chad and Renee McDowell, granddaughter of Ronnie and Katie Osman and Joyce McDowell, and sister of Caleb and Josie McDowell.
Conner was the recipient of the West Union Alumni Scholarship, the Jefferson Alumni Scholarship, the C103 Scholarship and The Edge Award from Northern Kentucky University. He was a member of Beta Club for three years and National Honor Society for two years, while serving as president his senior year.
Conner was First Team All-District and All-SHAC in soccer for two years, an All-County golfer, the SHAC runner of the year his senior year and District Champion his senior season for Long Jump and the 200 Meter Dash. He will attend Northern Kentucky University in the fall, majoring in Biological Sciences in order to pursue a medical degree in the future. Conner is the son of Craig and Carla Campbell, grandson of Audra and Rick Williams, Buck and the late Janet Campbell, and brother of Cameron Campbell.
In Honor Of
David Young graduated from West Union High School in 1972.  At WUHS, David participated in basketball and baseball.   He continued his baseball career at Eastern Kentucky University where he majored in Education.  David returned to Ohio where he taught Science, Health, and Physical Education.  He also began his coaching career, most notably basketball, where he coached at West Union, Waverly, Minford, Whiteoak and, finally, North Adams for 23 years.  David’s achievements include many SHL Coach of Years, District 14 Coach of the Years and, in 2009, Ohio Coach of the Year in Division III.  David was very proud of his players, school and community.  He found the most joy when his players succeeded off the court.
Mark Young graduated from West Union High School in 1978.  At West Union, Mark was a tri-sport athlete in basketball, baseball and football.  He excelled on the gridiron and received many offers to take his football talents to the next level.   Mark, focusing on education, attended Eastern Kentucky University where he majored in Business Administration.  Mark became a world traveler as he worked his way through the United States Department of Defense.  When Mark passed, he was working directly with Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld and his administration.  Some of Mark’s achievements include:  The Army Value of Engineering Award (1991), the 2004 Quality in the Space and Defense Industries Award (NASA) and, most notably, Al Gore’s Golden Hammer Award in 1999.
