High school golf hit the postseason last week and the road for the county teams began with the OHSAA Division II Sectional Tournament, 18 holes played on September 22 at the Buckeye Hills Country Club.
Inclement weather pushed the sectionals back one day but that didn’t deter three local golfers from this week’s district competition. In a field of 68 golfers, moving on will be Peebles senior Alyssa Smalley, West Union senior Geneva DeMint and Manchester junior Peyton Hayslip. In sectional play, the top four teams advance as well as the top four individuals who are not members of those qualifying teams.
For Smalley, it has been a memorable senior season to this point, winning the Adams County Cup and most recently, the individual champion of the Southern Hills Athletic Conference Tournament. In last week’s 18-hole sectional, Smalley carded a 45 on the front nine and a 41 on the back to finish at 86, good for the second individual berth in the district tourney and a sixth place tie in the sectional.
West Union’s DeMint took the third individual qualifying spot, scoring 45 on the front and 44 on the back for an 89 overall, good for a 10th place finish in the sectional.
Manchester’s Hayslip claimed the final individual district berth as she scored 49 over the front nine holes and then lowered that to 46 over the back nine, her 95 score placing her in an 11th place tie for the sectional.
The Division II Girls Southeast District II Tournament was held on Monday, September 28 at the Crown Hill Golf Course in Williamsport, Ohio. State tournament berths were on the line as the top two teams and the top two indivisual qualifiers advanced. (Those results were not available at press deadline).
