Ohio Department of Aging Cautions Ohioans about Post‑Storm Scams – Older Adults Urged to Watch for Home Repair Scams After Severe Weather.
In the wake of severe storms across Ohio last week, Ohio Department of Aging (AGE) Director Ursel J. McElroy is warning all Ohioans, including older adults, to beware of home repair scams.
“First and foremost, our thoughts are with everyone affected by Tuesday’s storms. As emergency crews continue their work, our department is partnering closely with local agencies to maintain essential services and help keep older Ohioans safe,” Director McElroy said. “Unfortunately, times of crisis often attract scammers who target older adults. And while older Ohioans are increasingly savvy about recognizing fraud, it’s important after an event like this to remind everyone to watch out for common scam tactics to protect themselves and their loved ones.”
Following a severe weather event, contractors may go door-to-door in neighborhoods offering to repair affected residents’ homes. Projects may include repairing roof damage, clearing fallen trees, and more.
By claiming that they can begin the work immediately or that they have materials remaining from a previous job, they may pressure residents into accepting their offer immediately or handing over insurance settlement checks. When a resident accepts their offer and pays them, they may never return, or they may complete the work with poor quality.
While many respectable businesses still go door-to-door to meet potential customers, you should always be careful about people who come to your home unexpectedly and you should always feel empowered to ask questions. If someone you do not know attempts to solicit business at your door, some tips include:
· Ask for written information about the company’s services
· Check to see whether the company is properly licensed
· Inform your insurance company about the offer
· Request time to consider the offer – at least a day or two
If a contractor pushes a resident to decide immediately, the resident should refuse the offer, call local law enforcement, and report a potential scam.
