Peebles’ Smalley, NA’s Holt also qualify

With the regular season in the rear view mirror, postseason action began for the county’s girls golf teams on September 22. All four county squads competed in the Division II sectional tournament at Buckeye Hills and it was the West Union Lady Dragons qualifying as a team to move on to district play.
The sectional was dominated by the Zane Trace Lady Pioneers who ran away with the top team spot, but it was West Union finishing second overall, making them one of the top four teams to advance. Also at the sectionals, the top four individual golfers who aren’t on a qualifying team also move to the district tourney and that group includes a pair of seniors, Peebles’ Alyssa Smalley and North Adams’ Emmy Holt.
The Lady Dragons, who will be looking to move out of the districts and on to the state tournament for the second consecutive season, and they were led at the sectionals (18 holes) by senior Nina McCann and junior Geneva DeMint, both of whom shot 93 for the day. McCann went 40 on the front nine and then 53 on the back for a 93 overall card with DeMint matching that with 49-44. Close behind was another senior, Emmy Stapleton, who carded a 95 (47-48) and sophomore Raeghan Rothwell, who came to the clubhouse with a 96 (51-45).
Smalley made the district cut by shooting a solid 89 (46-43) while Holt will advance after shooting 92 (45-47). The Manchester Lady Greyhounds also were part of the Division II sectional and their top score of the day belonged to sophomore Hope Scott, who fired a 107 (56-51).
The Division II Girls district Tournament was held on Tuesday, September 30 at the Crown Hill Golf Course in WIlliamsport, Ohio with the top two teams and the top two individual not on those team moving on to the OHSAA State Tournament. The district results were not available at press time so look for more in the October 8 edition.
