Peebles’ Smalley shoots 41 for individual title

It was the turn of the girls golf squads from the four Adams County high schools to take center stage as the Adams County Country Club hosted the 2025 Girls Adams County Cup tournament. With the girls from West Union, North Adams, Manchester and Peebles gathered at ACCC to battle it out for nine holes to determine bragging rights for another year.
When all was said and done on a rainy, then sunnt, then overcast September 3 afternoon, it was Coach Marci Nehus and her West Union Lady Dragons making it back-to-back County Cup championships, finishing 11 strokes ahead of second place North Adams. The Lady Dragons did not have the top two individual golfers on the day, but places three-four and five belonged to them as they snagged the Cup once again.
The overall individual champion of this year’s Cup was Peebles senior Alyssa Smalley, with her nine-hole score of 41, just edging out North Adams’ Emmy Holt, who shot a 42. As mentioned, the next three sports went to West Union, Raeghan Rothwell at 43, Piper Stapleton at 46 and Geneva DeMint at 47. North Adams’ Brooklyn Mahan also shot a 47 as those six girls were named to the All-County Team.
“We had a tough start but the team showed real grit and turned things around after the first few holes,” said Coach Nehus. “I’m proud of how our underclassmen stepped up under pressure and delivered when we needed them the most. We are going to continue practicing and preparing for the SHAC tournament next week.”
The Southern Hills Athletic Conference Tournament will begin on Wednesday, September 10 with the first nine holes being played at the Buckeye Hills Course. The final nine holes will be played on Wednesday, September 17 at the Adams County Country Club.
