The Nick Kremin Memorial Scholarship is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year. The scholarship was created twenty years ago by the Kremin family in memory of Peebles High School graduate, Nick Kremin – a son, brother, and uncle to the Kremin family of Peebles, Ohio. The scholarship was created to celebrate Nick’s life and to give back to the students at Peebles High School. The scholarship helps aspiring students fund their schooling with awards of $500 per recipient. The highly competitive scholarship is granted to those who participate in both athletics and the mentoring of local youths – two areas that were inspired by Nick’s life.
The 20th anniversary of Nick’s scholarship commemorates his legacy which has provided funding to over 60 students thanks to loyal sponsors and golfers who support the Nick Kremin Memorial Golf Scramble every year.
The first recipient of the Nick Kremin Memorial Scholarship was Peebles High School graduate Ty Stephens, Class of 2005. Two decades later, Ty is now the Principal of Peebles High School. He says that Nick had a profound effect on him during his elementary school years.
“It’s hard to believe it’s been 20 years since I graduated and received the Nick Kremin Memorial Scholarship,” he said, “As many kids do, I looked up to and wanted to be just like the older high school athletes. Some of my favorite memories are standing in line at the old high school waiting for the players to run out to the gym floor and give high fives. Nick was one of those athletes.”
Stephens also expressed his thanks to the Kremin family and to those who established the scholarship.
“Thank you,” he said, “I appreciated you trusting me with his memory and for allowing me to be a small part of the legacy that still inspires young athletes today.”
The Kremin family congratulates the students that have received Nick’s scholarship through the years and expresses thanks to those who make it possible every year.
“It has meant the world to our family,” said the Kremins. “It has become a cherished tradition.”
The 20th Annual Nick Kremin Memorial Golf Scramble will be held on September 20 at Hilltop Golf Course in Manchester, Ohio. “Life is short, swing hard.”
