There will be a public meeting on Tuesday, September 24 at 4 p.m. at the Adams County Training Center (old IGA building), 107 E. Walnut St., West Union, concerning the future of the historic Kirker Covered Bridge on State Rte. 136.

The meeting will be hosted by the Adams County Economic & Community Development and the Adams County Travel & Visitors Bureau.

On the evening of April 2, 2024, Adams County was hit with a category EF1 tornado which damaged the Kirker Covered Bridge, taking the roof off and damaging the historic structure built in the late 1800’s. The bridge is one of only two remaining covered bridges in Adams County. The bridge was named after Ohio’s second governor, Thomas Kirker.

Two covered bridge construction firms looked at the bridge earlier this summer to determine the extent of damage. Upon inspection numerous areas of concern were discovered, including rotting wood, foundation issues and structural integrity.

A meeting has been called to address these issues publicly and to explore funding options.

Mike Killilea of the The Righter Co. Inc. General Contractor, who examined the bridge, will be joining the meeting by Zoom to answer questions regarding structure issues and costs to repair the bridge. The Righter Company restored the historic Otway Covered Bridge.

It is requested that all interested parties attend this meeting to discuss options, form a committee if necessary and chart a path forward toward restoring the Kirker Covered Bridge.
