A six-hour police standoff late Wednesday, September 11, into the early morning hours of Thursday, September 12, resulted in the arrest of Drew Baker.

Baker is being held at the Adams County Jail in West Union, awaiting arraignment. He faces charges of felonious assault, failure to comply with the order of a police officer and two counts of having weapons while under disability.

The incident took place in the area of Cooper Road outside West Union and involved a report of shots being fired.

Officers from the Adams County Sheriff’s Department responded to the scene. According to Chief Deputy Bob Ruebusch, Baker barricaded himself inside his residence and refused to come out.

The standoff required assistance from five Ohio State Highway Patrol (OSP) officers, and the Brown County SWAT team was also called to the scene.

At least two shots were fired by Baker inside the residence during the standoff, Ruebusch told The People’s Defender.

The situation was resolved when officers deployed tear gas, forcing Baker, who was still armed, out of the residence.

The suspect was taken into custody without further incident, and a gun was recovered at the scene. No shots were fired by officers, Ruebusch said.

“I want to commend all the officers on scene, including the members of the OSP and Brown County SWAT, for their professionalism in a tense situation,” Ruebusch added. “The officers on scene showed great restraint, and thankfully, no one was injured.”
