Lady Devils fall to Eastern Pike

By Mark Carpenter-

It is a unique way that the folks at the VA Memorial Stadium in Chillicothe prepare their minor league baseball field to be used for high school softball and the North Adams Lady Devils got a first-hand look at that experience on Tuesday, April 23 as they traveled to the VA to face off with the Eastern Pike Lady Eagles. Though the won-loss record is not what the Lady Devils and head coach Kelly Boerger had hoped for this spring, Tuesday’s game was still an opportunity for the girls to play in an all-around different environment.
Unfortunately for the North Adams squad, Tuesday’s contest didn’t go as planned as the Lady Eagles broke open a relatively close game late and defeated the Lady Devils by a final score of 14-2.
Eastern Pike stroke first, getting two runs off of North Adams starter Macey Jarvis, but the Lady Devils sliced that deficit in the bottom of the first when lead off hitter Hailey Smith reached on an error and came home two outs later on a base hit to center by clean up hitter Alaina Eiterman.
The Lady Eagles added four more runs in their second at-bat to go up 6-1 and the Lady Devils were able to get one of those back in the bottom of the third when Madison Richey walked and later scored on an Eastern Pike error.
That would be the final tally of the evening on the North Adams side of the scoreboard and the Lady Eagles continued to pad their advantage bu adding one run in the fifth, two in the sixth, and then capped off their offensive day by scoring five time in the seventh to account for the final runs in their 14-2 triumph.
The Lady Devils were scheduled to face Eastern Brown in Southern Hills Athletic Conference play on Thursday but that game was cancelled and rescheduled for Thursday, May 2 at NAHS. On Tuesday, April 30, Coach Boerger’s troops will again be in SHAC play, weather permitting, hosting the West Union Lady Dragons.
