The infield was abuzz at West Union High School on Tuesday, April 9 as the Dragons hosted their annual Track and Field Invitational, welcoming 10 teams to the competition. It’s always an undertaking to host a track meet with that many squads on hand, but everything went off without a hitch and some local teams fared quite well when the evening came to a close. Besides the host Dragons, teams from Peebles, North Adams, Lynchburg, Eastern Brown, Whiteoak, Manchester, Green, Notre Dame, Fayetteville, and Felicity competed in the 2019 Invitational.
The 2019 spring season has some serious talent in the county track teams, both boys and girls, and that was evident when the final results were posted for Tuesday’s Invitational. Even without Jenny and Katy Seas, who were both out nursing injuries, and sprinter Jacey Justice, the Peebles Lady Indians still came out on top in the team standings, followed by two more county squads, West Union in second and North Adams third. On the boys side, the host Dragons held the high ground and took first place in the team standings, with Peebles placing fifth.
Again, there were numerous individual and relay champions representing county schools. Those first-place finishers included: Karissa Buttelwerth (NAHS)- Girls 100 Meter Dash and 200 Meter Dash; Lilly Gray (PHS)- Girls 400 Meter Dash and 800 Meter Run; Myla Toole (NAHS)- Girls 1600 Meter Run; Kaitlyn Fulton (WUHS)- Girls 3200 Meter Run; Kierra Stone (PHS)- Girls 300 Meter Hurdles; Peebles Girls- 4 x 100 Relay, 4 x 200 Relay, 4 x 400 Relay; Jaisyra White (WUHS)- Girls High Jump; Sierra Kendall (NAHS)- Girls Long Jump; Lizzie Gill (NAHS)- Girls Shot Put; Payne Zimmerman (NAHS)- Boys 100 Meter Dash; Conner Campbell (WUHS)- Boys 200 Meter Dash and Boys Long Jump; Kyle Lightner (PHS)- Boys 800 Meter Run; and the West Union Boys- 4 x 100 Relay;.
