Revolution of Rabbits is a unique opportunity for youth interested in completing a livestock project through 4-H. Feeding and caring for a market animal is a great way for youth to develop a sense of responsibility, compassion and work ethic. They are responsible for keeping accurate feed and financial records and compete in a positive, healthy environment. Possibly the best part is the new friendship and fun that comes with exhibiting livestock.
Occasionally there are obstacles to overcome when considering a livestock project. Families may not have the knowledge, space or finances to take on an animal. The market rabbit project is a great entry level livestock project because it requires a minimal amount of space. Through this program the Small Animal Committee is able to help offset costs and provide needed mentorship to allow youth the best chance for a great 4-H experience.
Revolution of Rabbits was started as part of the 4-H “Revolution of Responsibility” campaign six years ago. The program is funded through the Small Animal Committee and returns from past recipients. Members who are accepted into the program are provided a rabbit hutch, resource book, record book, equipment required, feed and three market rabbits. Youth also attend the rabbit clinic, receiving Assuring Quality Care of Animals certification and rabbit tattooing where they learn how to properly feed and care for their project.
Members will exhibit their market rabbits at the 2019 Adams County Fair which runs July 7 – 13. Providing the animals meet the weight requirements, the exhibitor will sell a pen of two rabbits in the Small Animal Sale on Friday evening of the fair. Following the fair, members will return the hutch, equipment and the third rabbit as well as up to 40% of the sale proceeds up to a maximum of $50 to the Small Animal Committee to help sustain the program. The goal is the member will then reinvest their profits into a project for the following year.
