Summer Solstice Celebration at Serpent Mound is June 21-24

Join the Friends of Serpent Mound (FOSM) for their annual Summer Solstice Celebration and be a part of four days of lectures, workshops, tours, music, and more. The festival starts Thursday, June 21 at 5 p.m. and continues through Sunday, June 24 at Soaring Eagle Retreat, adjacent to Serpent Mound. Parking is available at Serpent Mound and at the Soaring Eagle Retreat field located at 375 Horner Chapel Road in Peebles. “This year we have something new and unique.” says Delsey Wilson, Executive Director of FOSM, “We created a grass labyrinth. I will start the festival with a presentation about FOSM and the Labyrinth at 5 p.m. on Thursday. After some final touches, it will be officially open to the public to walk during festival hours. We will line it with luminaries at 8:30 p.m., Thursday through Saturday, until 11 p.m. Sunday hours are 10 a.m.- 8 p.m. Also, at 1 p.m. on Friday is a People’s Seasonal Circle. Gather in a circle and share what the beginning of summer means to you.”
Festival presenters include Hugh Newman, Gary Argabright, Brian Busse, Ron Bergner, JJ Ainsworth, Douglas Ross Hamilton, E.P. (Ed) Grondine, DAK, Mike Bastine, Fletcher Wilson, Tom Johnson, Deo Abellera, and Jeffrey and Delsey Wilson. Subjects or titles include “The Women Who Saved Serpent Mound”, Mound Builder Cultures, singing bowls, ancient symbolism, earthwork comparisons, “The Giants of Stonehenge and Ancient Britain”, “Serpent Effigies of North America”, “The Evidence for the Presence of the Fluted Point Peoples in Post-Glacial Ohio”, stones and crystals, CE-5, paranormal, the supernatural, and finally, about the community that loves Serpent Mound.
There will be singing, music, and storytelling by Steve Free, Zack Kouns, Jordan Serpentini, Spirits of the Winds, Debbie “YellowFlicker” Brubaker, and Dona Greene. Thursday and Friday night at 9 p.m. the public is welcome to bring their own percussion instrument and join the Open Drumming. For those with more talents, Friday and Saturday at 9 p.m. will be Open Mic Jam Sessions.
Shop with our vendors or attend a workshop. Learn about making homemade ice cream, fermenting wild edibles, learning to meditate, learn about flower essence, dowsing or Chakradance. There are also workshops where you make your own item, like a leather medicine bag, tie dying without tie dying, make a bath time detox, carve on Ohio pipestone, do yoga, and crafts for kids.
Local naturalist Jenny Richards from Shawnee State Park will lead a hike Friday at 6 p.m. through the different eco-systems around Serpent Mound. At 9 p.m. on Friday, Richard Carpino with The Haunted Byrd will lead a paranormal workshop/hike around Soaring Eagle. Zack Kouns will lead an edible plants hike on Saturday at 4 p.m. Every evening at 7 p.m. get a guided tour around Serpent Mound and watch the sunset.
