The FBI is investigating cancer clinics in Adams, Clermont and Scioto counties for an undisclosed, “sealed, federal matter.”

The Adams County Cancer Center was the focus of a raid on Tuesday afternoon, Feb. 23. The public was turned away while agents from the Office of the Inspector General conducted their investigation.

According to Special Agent Ben Unkefer, with the Department of Health and Human Services, Office of the Inspector General, “No patients are being seen, the office is closed today (Tuesday), but as far as I know it should reopen by tomorrow.”

Adams County Cancer Center is the only cancer treatment center in Adams County.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS)is the U.S. government’s principal agency for protecting the health of all Americans and providing essential human services, especially for those who are least able to help themselves.

HHS is responsible for almost a quarter of all federal outlays and administers more grant dollars than all other federal agencies combined. The Department manages programs that cover a vast spectrum of activities that impact health, public health, and human services outcomes throughout the life span. HHS, through its programs and partnerships prepares Americans for, protects Americans from, and provides comprehensive responses to health, safety, and security threats, both foreign and domestic, whether natural or man-made; and serves as responsible stewards of the public’s investments.

The Office of Inspector General’s (OIG) is charged with protecting the integrity of Department of Health & Human Services (HHS) programs as well as the health and welfare of program beneficiaries.

Since it was established, OIG has been at the forefront of the nation’s efforts to fight waste, fraud and abuse in Medicare, Medicaid and more than 100 other HHS programs.

HHS OIG is the largest inspector general’s office in the Federal Government, with approximately 1,600 dedicated to combating fraud, waste and abuse and to improving the efficiency of HHS programs. A majority of OIG’s resources goes toward the oversight of Medicare and Medicaid — programs that represent a significant part of the Federal budget and that affect this country’s most vulnerable citizens. OIG’s oversight extends to programs under other HHS institutions, including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, National Institutes of Health, and the Food and Drug Administration.
