“A” league baseball action visited the West Union Recreation Park last Saturday night as West Union 2, coached by Brian Fulton, entertained Coach Dean Brown’s Peebles 1 squad. Coach Brown’s troops played rude guests as they handed the host team a 15-2 defeat to improve their record to 2-0 on the summer and drop West Union to 0-3.

Peebles started early off of West Union starter Christian Inman, scoring in the top of the first when a Tyler Fenner base hit drove home Alex Seaman who had earlier singled and stolen second base.

The score remained at 1-0 until the top of the third when Peebles blasted Inman for a big six-spot. The first five Peebles hitters in the inning reached base, beginning with another base hit by Fenner. John Penn was hit by a pitch and Lane Hanson singled to fill the bases. A base hit by Austin Newkirk brought two home, followed by a walk to Clay Brown. Run-scoring hits by Jacob Lightner, Seaman, and Daniel Wolford gave the visitors a 7-1 margin after their third at-bat.

With Seaman on the mound for Peebles, West Union scored its only two runs of the game in the bottom of the third, the latter of those coming on a Lance Holbrook double that scored Bill Hackathorn.

The Peebles offense continued to fire on all cylinders, picking up three more runs in the fourth inning and another trio in the top half of the sixth, storming to a commanding 13-2 advantage. Two more in the top of the seventh off West Union reliever Lance Holbrook made the final score 15-2 in favor of the unbeaten squad from Peebles.

The Peebles offense was paced by Alex Seaman, whose bat produced three hits, two runs batted in, two walks, and two runs scored. Danile Wolford was 3 for 5 with three driven in while Jacob Lightner was a perfect 2 for 2.

On the mound for the winners, Seaman, Austin Parks, and Lane Hanson combined to pitch seven innings of two-run baseball, striking out 13 West Union hitters.

Peebles 1 was back in action on Monday night traveling to Manchester to face the 2-0 Greyhounds and the visitors led 1-0 after a half-inning before Mother Nature produced a downpour that turned the Manchester field into a muddy quagmire and forced the suspension of the game, which will be completed at a later date. Peebles 1 will be back in action for sure on Monday, June 23 when they will be back in West Union to battle West Union 1.

West Union 2 will be back on the diamond on Saturday night, playing host to Peebles 2.
