Coach Rachel Herman and her North Adams Lady Devils golf squad remained perfect on the season at two wins in two outings as they grabbed another victory at the Adams County Country Club on Aug. 15. On the course with the Lady Devils were girls golf squads from West Union, Fairfield, and Peebles, with the Lady Devils coming out on top with an impressive team score of 198, 18 strokes better than second place West Union.
Fairfield finished third at 228 and Peebles only had three girls participate, not enough to tally a team score.
The medalist for the day came from the winning North Adams squad as Kylee Applegate shot a 45 for the nine holes, followed very closely by teammate Jade Spriggs at 46. In her first year of golf, the Lady Devils’ Caitlin Young cut 10 strokes off her first outing and came in with a 50 on Friday. Brooklyn Young shot 57, Erin Newman 63, and Kylie Branch 70 to round out the North Adams scores.
West Union was led by Rayanna McFarland, who shot 48 for nine holes, while Peebles was topped by Josey Scott at 49.
“Today was a good test for our girls,” said Herman. “Having everyone here we were really able to see where we stand and breaking 200 in girls golf is a huge goal to reach and we did it in our second match of the season. Having three girls in the day’s top five really sets our standards high for the rest of the season.”
“There is still room for improvement, especially this early. Caitlin Young really stepped up and showed what she is capable of and I can always rely on Brooklyn to give us a consistent score. This could be a breakout year for Kylee Applegate and Jade Spriggs. Even though they are only juniors, I am looking for some career low scores from them.”
