Fresh off their win in the 2014 Adams County Cup, the West Union Dragons golf squad was right back in action the next two days, competing in the Portsmouth Invitational on Aug. 14 and hosting a tri-match at the Adams County Country Club the next day.
The Aug. 15 tri-match saw the Dragons host two fellow members of the Southern Hills Athletic Conference in the Lynchburg Mustangs and the Fairfield Lions. It was the Dragons getting the best of their two rivals, behind the play of frehsman Elijah McCarty, who shot a 74 on the day to lead his squad. Right behind McCarty was teammate Brandon Daniel with a 75, followed by Tyler Fowler with a 76 and Craig Horton with a 78, for a team total of 303, 22 shots better than second place Lynchburg. The Mustangs did have the day’s medalist as Zach Blankenship scored 70 for 18 holes.
The previous day the Dragons traveled to the Portsmouth Elks Course to compete with 13 other teams in a tough day of golf. The Dragons placed eighth overall in the team standings with a total score of 354 in an event won by Logan High School at 304.
For West Union, the top score of the day belonged to Brandon Daniel at 85 for 18 holes, followed by Horton at 87, Fowler at 89. and McCarty at 93.
