It was volleyball camp time in early June at Peebles High School and the Lady Indians brought in a heavy hitter to assist as former Ohio State All-American Tom Trantow was on hand to help teach the game to the assembled campers. The camp ran from June 2-4 and was split into two sessions each day, one for junior high players and one for high school players.
Trantow was an All-American and the captain of the OSU men’s volleyball squad and has coached at the high school and club level for five years, including a stint as the Peebles JV coach in 2009. He also spends time on the other side of the net as he a licensed OHSAA volleyball official. His passion is to see youngsters improve through repetition, correct technique, and building confidence in stressful situations.
Also a coach at the camp was 2014 Peebles graduate Katie McFarland. Last fall, Katie finished a remarkable career at Peebles winning all-league honors for the third year and all-district honors for the second. Katie played club volleyball for Spiketown, Cincy East, and the Southern Ohio Volleyball Club. As a defensive specialist, she helped lead her Southern Ohio 18R team to a top-ten finish in the Ohio region. Katie’s goals are to see the young players improve and enjoy the game.
Campers who attended the session of the camp for junior high athletes were: Breauna Shoemaker, Anna Kremin, Kylie Sims, Madison Beekman, Hope Brown, Harlee Wilkinson, Kaylee Ferguson, Hannah Johnson, Carlie Cluxton, Tori Shriver, Kenzee Cadwallader, and Kaelin White.
Campers for the high school session included Annie McFarland, Alanys Skaggs, Josie Myers, Jessica Newkirk, Kendall Kelley, Gabby Rose, Baylee Justice, Trystan Francis, Reagan Dick, Sarah McFarland, Kennedy Newman, and McKinlee Ryan.
