July 7-9 saw a sporting event thus far unique to Adams County as the North Adams Lady Devils soccer program hosted the county’s first-ever youth soccer camp. Seven campers, from grades 2-5, took part in the three-day camp, which was led by Lady Devils varsity coach Dave D’Avignon and his staff of high school assistants.
“Our players decided to have the camp in order to have some fun teaching the younger players some of the basics of the game.” said Coach D’Avignon. “It was good for the campers because they learned some new things about soccer and it was good for the varsity players to organize and share what they already know.”
The camp was held at the North Adams High School soccer field and each camper was assigned to a varsity player who with D’Avignon’s direction, worked with the camper one-on-one for the three days. Each camper received a camp t-shirt and a new soccer ball with the instructions to “wear this ball out so you have to come back next year for a new one.”
“In the words of one of the parents, the kids had a blast,” added D’Avignon. “The varsity players had a blast too and are all set to do it again next year so we will.”
