By sheer numbers, it was pretty much a foregone conclusion that the track teams from Manchester High School were going to be the ones hoisting the championship hardware at last week’s annual Adams County Track Meet, but that did nothing to dim the competition of the day. All four county schools were represented as West Union High School hosted the event last Thursday afternoon and the effort of the athletes involved made it a memorable day in county track history.

It was also a day that saw more school records broken, beginning with Peebles senior Sidney Pell, who broke the school’s Shot Put record with an impressive toss of 39’1.5”. The Manchester boys 4 x 200 relay team consisting of Jordan Freeman, Brendon Kessler, Daniel Hernandez, and Ryan Day also set a school record with their time of 1:41.

The high school field events began the meet with Pell winning the Shot Put as did fellow Indian Steven Roberts. The Discus titles went to Pell and Manchester’s Jeff Young. The girls Long Jump title went to Manchester’s Bethany Sweeney and the boys to West Union’s Jeffrey Franklin. Tess Burns of Manchester took the Girls High Jump and Franklin took the boys.

On the track now, the 4 x 800 relay races both went to the Greyhounds and Manchester sophomore Summer Wilbur took the girls 100M Hurdles. The Hounds’ Billy Streetman won the boys 110M Hurdles and as expected the girls 100M Dash winner was West Union’s Madigan Marshall. Franklin kept his outstanding day going by winning the 100M Dash in a tough battle with Manchester’s Kessler.

Manchester swept both the 4 x 200 relays, with the boys breaking the aforementioned school record and Manchester freshman Shyanne Tucker captured the Girls 1600M run, with West Union’s Jakeb Tadlock winning the Boys 1600M. Continuing to dominate the relay races, Manchester took both of the 4 x 100 races and the Hounds’ Jordan Freeman won the boys 400M Dash, with Ashley Hackworth of West Union easily winning the girls 400M.

Manchester’s Wilbur made an encore performance by winning the girls 300M Hurdles, while a determined Spencer Kelley of Peebles took the boys 300M Hurdles. Hackworth made it two for two as she won the girls 800M Run and teammate Tadlock did the same, winning the boys 800M.

The fleet-footed Marshall ran away with the girls 200M Dash and Franklin made it a perfect day for himself, winning his fourth individual event, taking the boys 200M Dash. Manchester’s Tucker took the grueling girls 3200M Run with West Union’s Tadlock doing the same, his third distance event win of the meet.

The day concluded with the 4 x 400 relays and finally someone broke the Manchester stranglehold as West Union captured the girls 4 x 400, but the Hounds managed to still take the boys race.

In a very well run meet by the West Union staff, the final team scores were as follows:
