Continuing a quite impressive, the West Union Lady Dragons seventh grade girls basketball squad picked up win number 12 last week against just a single loss as they rolled past the North Adams Lady Devils last Wednesday evening by a final score of 34-8. There weren’t many games played last week because of all the winter cancellations but the two county schools managed to sneak a night of girls junior high basketball at North Adams into the schedule.

The story of this game early was the West Union defense, which pitched a first quarter shutout. On the offensive end, the Lady Dragons dominated, getting numerous offensive rebounds and shot opportunities, but still managed just five points themselves in the opening stanza, getting baskets from McKenzie Bickett and Mckenzie Kirker plus a Kiersten Rowe free throw.

The Lady Devils did not score until the 5:20 mark of the second period when they got a bucket from Grace McDowell. Unfortunately, the home team would be blanked for the next four minutes, while the Lady Dragons rattled off 11 in succession to open up a big 18-2 lead. Included in that West Union run was a nice put back basket by Kirker, a “3” from Alexa Pennington, plus two scores from Jaycee Baldwin. McDowell got the next North Adams basket late in the half but at the break, the visitors were in complete control, leading 20-4.

The third quarter saw the North Adams offense again stifled, getting just a McDowell free throw over the six minute span. West Union got baskets from Baldwin, Heidi Hunter, and Lucy Kersey as Coach Jessica Johnson freely used her reserves throughout the entire quarter as her team built a 27-5 advantage.

With the outcome long since decided, the Lady Dragons again shuttled players in and out in the final period, outscoring the Lady Devils 7-3. The Dragons got a free throw from Lindsay Daniel and a basket by Harley Silvia in the final six minutes, while North Adams got a basket from Christin Young, but when the final horn blared, it was West Union moving to 12-1 with the easy 34-8 victory.

Jaycee Baldwin led the victorious Lady Dragons with 9 points, followed by Alexa Pennington and Kiersten Rowe with 5 apiece. For North Adams, Grace McDowell led with 6.

The win kept the Lady Dragons in a first place tie with Lynchburg in the Southern Hills Athletic Conference and those two teams still have to play a regular season game to decide the title.
