On the only officially scheduled school holiday thus far this week, Coach Brock Caldwell and his North Adams Lady Devils JV squad made the long trek to Ironton High School to take part in the Martin Luther King Day JV Classic. The JV Lady Devils are in the midst of an outstanding season and they moved their record to 12-1 with a 35-28 win over the host Ironton Lady Tigers.

Things didn’t begin so well for the visiting Lady Devils as they fell behind early as they had no answer for Ironton’s D’Layre Keith who scored 11 points in the first quarter. North Adams got two buckets apiece from Katie Pertuset and Madison Jenkins to stay close and trailed the Lady Tigers 13-9 after one period.

Neither team put up much of an offensive effort in the second quarter, both sides scoring 6 apiece. The Lady Devils got just one field goal, that from Jenkins, and at the half they still were on the short end of the score, behind 19-15.

Coach Caldwell’s halftime speech must have been a good one as his team came out and dominated the third quarter to the tune of 11-2. Three-pointers by Kamia York and Taylor Wylie helped spur the Lady Devils into the lead, one that stood at 26-21 after three.

North Adams got a pair of buckets from Jenkins in the final quarter and a pair of free throws from Caitlin Young as they held off the home team and held on for a 35-28 win, their 12thin a row after suffering a loss in their season opener.

“The game was a great experience for us,” said Coach Caldwell. “It was a hard fought game from a very good Ironton team. Hopefully this game will continue to help these young ladies get ready for the next level.”

Freshman Madison Jenkins had a big day for the Lady Devils, recording a double double of 11 points and 15 rebounds. Katie Pertuset added 9 points and Kamia York 7 for the winners. Ironton was led by D’Layre Keith’s 14 points, but the Lady Devils held her to just 3 after the first quarter.
