The 2013 version of the McDonald’s Holiday Classic will arrive this weekend, beginning on Friday night at this year’s host, West Union High School. The always popular tournament, which gives two varsity teams county bragging rights for a year, has a different format this year. Instead of being played four nights in succession after Christmas, the tourney is being split between the weekend before the holiday and the weekend after.
The action begins this Friday night with a varsity girls match up between Manchester and Peebles that will tip off at 6 p.m., followed by the two varsity boys teams from those same schools battling at 7:30 p.m.
On Saturday night, both of the tournament’s defending champions will be beginning their title defenses. The North Adams Lady Devils, six-time defending champions, will tangle with West Union at 6 p.m. The two teams met earlier in December, with North Adams coming out on top 72-38. At 7:30 p.m., the North Adams Green Devils boys squad, winners of last year’s Classic, will face off with the very dangerous host team, the West Union Dragons.
Friday, Dec. 27 will be the two varsity consolation games at West Union with the girls game starting at 6 p.m. Varsity championship night will be Dec. 28, with the girls title contest tipping off at 6 p.m. and the boys at 7:30 p.m.
In the midst of the varsity action, there will also be a Classic JV Tournament, held at North Adams High School. The JV tournament will be played in two days, Dec. 27-28.
On Day One at 10 a.m., the girls JV squads from Manchester and Peebles will face off, followed at 11:30 a.m. by a JV boys match up of the same two schools. At 1 p.m., the West Union and North Adams JV girls will square off followed at 2:30 p.m. by the West Union and North Adams JV boys.
Day Two of the JV action sees the girls and boys consolation games at 10 a.m. and 11:30 a.m respectively, and the JV championship games at 1 p.m. and 2:30 p.m.
This year’s tourney does have an extra added twist. For years the generosity of Bob and Georgia Gallowitz and McDonald’s have allowed county basketball fans to enjoy this holiday tournament and this year for the first time they will see one of their own family participate. Their granddaughter, Kendall Gallowitz, is a member of the West Union Lady Dragons JV team.
