It’s pretty safe to say that the season has gotten off to a roaring start for Coach Tony Williams and his North Adams lady Devils 8th grade girls squad. In fact, it is a perfect start to this point as the Lady Devils sit at 5-0 after getting wins over Peebles and Whiteoak last week.

Last Wednesday, the Lady Devils traveled to Peebles to renew a county rivalry with Coach Josh Ryan and his Lady Indians. The North Adams defense took control early, blanking the Lady Indians in the first quarter and using three baskets from Avery Harper to take a 10-0 lead.

The home team seemed to regain their bearings a bit in the middle two periods, riding the hot hand of McKinlee Ryan who scored 13 in the second and third quarters together, but it was still the Lady Devils on top 28-20 heading into the final six minutes.

“Our pressure gave them some problems early and we were able to get out to a nice lead,” said Coach Williams. “We lost some assignments in the second and third quarters and allowed their shooters to get some open looks. We have to get that corrected.”

The fourth quarter could certainly be classified as low-scoring as the two teams only mustered seven points between them. North Adams got baskets from Adison Wright and Charlee Louden to close out a hard-earned 32-23 victory.

“The game got pretty physical in the second half and I was pleased with how we kept our composure and focused on the task at hand and were able to get a solid victory,” said Williams. “Peebles is a well-coached team that will keep improving. They will be a dangerous team come tournament time.”

North Adams was led by Avery Harper’s 11 points, while McKinlee Ryan of Peebles led all scorers with 13.

If the North Adams game on Saturday had been a prize fight, it would have been called early as the Lady Devils completely dominated the Whiteoak Lady Wildcats, winning by a final score of 54-5.

North Adams led at every quarter break, 16-0, 30-1, and 43-1 and placed 10 different players in the scoring column.

“Everyone did a great job today, running our offensive sets and contributing to a nice victory for us,” said Coach Williams. “What I love about this team is how unselfish they are and how they push each other to be better players every day. We have to continue that in order to reach our goals of a regular season league title plus a league tournament championship.”

“We know we are going to have to work extremely hard to reach these goals as there are nine other teams wanting the same thing.”

The Lady Devils actually have two more contests scheduled before the Christmas hiatus. Tonight they will host Manchester and on Saturday they are again at home to Lynchburg, both Southern Hills Athletic Conference games.
