I am happy to be serving now as the editor/content manager for The People’s Defender.
A unique set of circumstances delayed my introduction to readers. I was actually appointed the first week in December, but no announcement was made because a short time later I was off my feet with some health problems.
The newspaper is owned by Civitas Media, which owns more than 50 newspapers in Ohio. Civitas Media also owns The Ripley Bee and The News Democrat in Georgetown, where I am also the editor/content manager. I have been with The News Democrat since 1997 and with The Ripley Bee since it was purchased in 2002.
Before that I was an editor and a sports editor at the Portsmouth Daily Times from 1987-1997. Folks in Adams County during that time period may remember me as I covered a lot of high school basketball in the area. I saw some great high school games and saw the old West Union gym packed on many occasions.
While I am not from Adams County, you couldn’t get much closer. I grew up on a small tobacco farm a few miles east of Buena Vista which is on the Scioto/Adams County line along the Ohio River. Shawnee Forest was in my backyard and the Ohio River bottoms in my front yard.
My father, Arthur, grew up in Rome during the Great Depression. He later returned to the area after a military stint to marry my mother and raise a family.
I have gotten to know many people in Adams County over the years. After the 1997 Flood I moved my family from our small farm near where I grew up to Georgetown where I became editor of The News Democrat. I still have many family members in the Buena Vista area and we have camped the last two years at the Sandy Springs Campground.
I have immersed myself in the Brown County community since moving there in 1998 and hope to do the same here. This week I was notified by the Brown County Chamber of Commerce that I had won the Chamber’s Horizon award. The award is given to Chamber members who have served the community and the organization for a number of years. I am past president of the Chamber. There will me many of you who will know me from my service to the Lions Club organization also.
The staff at The People’s Defender produces stories for both our print and our online publications. The peoplesdefender.com website has long been an online presence in Adams County and will continue to grow.
I look forward to meeting many of you over the coming months. The best time to catch me at the Defender office is on Mondays (all day) and Wednesday afternoon.
I have already heard from many of you and I appreciate the input. I know we can always improve and we are striving to do that with each edition.
