Southern State Community College will offer Biotech 2014 Edvotek Workshop: Biotechnology Applications for Agriculture and Education from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Friday, May 16, on the college’s Fayette Campus, located1270 U.S. Route 62 SW, in Washington C.H.

The workshop is offered free of charge, however, because the workshop will involve hands-on participation, the number of participants will be limited and reservations are required. Call 1-800-628-7722, ext. 5610, to reserve a spot.

“Our most important objective is that you learn in a comfortable setting,” said Dr. David Garippa, SSCC professor who is coordinating the event. “So please know that you are welcome to attend even if you have no experience in biotechnology. This promises to be an informative, productive day for all.”

Attendees will develop an in-depth knowledge of biotechnology through hands-on participation in polymerase chain reaction, thermal cycler (PCR machine) including the Edvotek Mega Cycler, horizontal electrophoresis, and protein purification. The workshop will include an overview of basic procedures and equipment use.

During the morning session training lab, participants will study a wild type of a mustard family plant, Arabidopsis thaliana, which contains fire hairs, or trichomes. A mutant variety lacks the trichromes. Through use of a thermal cycler, participants will be able to identify the mutant variety of the plant, and protein purification will be performed.

For more information, contact Dr. Garippa at 1-800-628-7722, ext. 5635, ordgarippa@sscc.edu. To make a reservation for the May 16 event, call 1-800-628-7722, ext. 5610.
