A message from the WUHS Principal
West Union High School has been busy over the past couple f months. The Veterans Day Program was held Nov. 8 and was directed by Mrs. Megan McCarty. West Union welcomed 51 veterans and auxiliary members to the school. The veterans had their lunch at the school and later visited classes and spoke to the students.
West Union High School is sponsoring several fundraisers and charities to give back to the community. Each month Beta hosts a Hat Day. Students pay a dollar and they get to wear a hat. All profits go to that month’s cause. Last month the school raised $151 for the Ohio Veteran Home in Georgetown. This December all the profits will go to the Ronald McDonald House. Beta and NHS are running a canned food drive. Students and staff will bring canned food. Beta is also supporting a new hat, gloves, and socks drive for the community.
Prom fund raising went well this year. The Junior Class raised around $1,700. The Prom Advisor says this is the most a class has raised from a single fundraiser since she has been advising. This total was raised by a group effort of 30 students, led by Junior Morgan Ross who sold over 60 items.
The West Union Academic Team has had a good season this year with 5 victories and 2 losses. The team has been led by Captain Eli Bedel with help from Captain Jake Vermuelen. Alexander Creamer, Tyler Evans, Ryan Toney, Jarred Dhonau, Josh Grooms, Marissa Evans, Michael Sheridan, Sydney Roberts, Karma Collins, Mackenzie Smith, Erika Proffitt, Mary Hinton, Hannah Mitchell, and Paige Welch.
Mr. Mitchell, Academic Team Coach, said, “I enjoyed my first year coaching the Academic team. It was exciting and interesting. The atmosphere was very relaxed, and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves. I think the team did a great job this year. We were competitive in every match which made it even more fun to be a part of.” When tallying up the scores of the 5 wins this year, the winning margin was an average of 12 points per game. Of the 2 losses, the losing margin was only 3 points per game.
Green and White Night was held Nov. 14. What was a night of cheering and spirit! Members of all basketball and cheer teams were introduced, and high school teams scrimmaged. On Dec. 13, after the high school basketball game, West Union High School and Junior High danced the night away at the annual Snow Ball dance. The dance, hosted by the Performing Arts Department, was a video dance. Music videos were played throughout the night and students had great fun.
This year’s Wendy’s Heisman Awards were won by Seniors Joshua Grooms and Marci Schneider. Joshua Grooms is a member of the track and cross-country teams, while Marci Schneider is a part of the golf and basketball teams. Congratulations to our students on their achievements.
One of the best fundraisers completed by our school was hosted by the FFA. The organization’s fruit fundraiser has done very well this year with a total of over $15,000 raised. Congratulations to the FFA on their hard work at fund raising.
