Two to three city blocks of West Union were evacuated last Saturday night as the result of a large gas main being broken. Shortly before six o’clock, the West Union Fire Department was dispatched to 311 North Street as a result of that gas main being broken in the middle of the street, possibly due to the warmer weather conditions.
The evacuation was necessary because of fear that the escaping gas might enter the village’s sewer system, but the leak was contained and Duke Energy arrived on the scene at 8:30 p.m.
A number of people were part of the investigation and evacuation, including Stations 15 and 17, the West Union Police Department plus some off-duty officers, the Adams County Sheriff’s Office, the West Union Public Works Department, and the West Union EMS.
