Two new Ohio sunfish size records set this week A new state record Warmouth and Pumpkinseed sunfish has been certified by the Outdoor Writers of Ohio State Record Fish Committee.
An Ohio state record Warmouth Sunfish, weighing 1.32 pounds has been caught by Douglas Koenig, of Salem, from a Mahoning County farm pound on July 19. Koenig's record Warmouth was 10 and three fourths inches long with a girth of 11 and one fourth inches.
That catch replaces the previous state record Warmouth caught from LaDue Reservoir by William Reed in May of 2006, which weighed 1.19 pounds and was 10 and a half inches long.
Ohio Division of Wildlife fisheries biologist Phil Hillman at Wildlife District Three identified Koenig's catch.
Another state record has also been certified by the Outdoor Writers of Ohio. A new Pumpkinseed Sunfish weighing 1.10 pounds was caught by Scott Boykin, of Uniontown, from a farm pond in Portage County. Boykin's record catch was 10 and one half inches long and was caught using waxworms for bait on June 12.
Boykin's record replaces the previous state record Pumpkinseed caught in 2001 by Terry Rush while ice fishing that weighed 3/4 of a pound and was nine and a half inches long.

Ohio state record fish are certified by the Outdoor Writers of Ohio State Record Fish Committee. Assisting in the process is fisheries biologist with the Ohio Division of Wildlife.
