Lightning strikes American Heritage at Brushcreek
Dumping a total of 4 inches of rain from Wednesday through the early morning hours on Friday, mother nature wasn't kind to Adams County during the week leading up to the Ninth Annual American Heritage Classic at the 1/3 mile speed plant three miles south of Peebles.
With the large amount of rain in a short period, many were left wondering if the '09 Heritage Classic would go off as planned on Friday July 31. Once the rain had moved out of the area, track personnel began preparing the track for the evenings scheduled festivities.
Eighty two modified drivers, representing eight states filled the pit area with hopes of riding home a brand new Heritage Softail Harley Davidson by nights end. In the end, it was Lightning Chassis builder Don Adams who topped the stellar field to pick up the biggest win of his career.
As the evening turned into night, fog began to roll into the valley. With cars on the track, the fog would blow off, but once they left, it began to roll in again. Once the American Heritage feature was lined up they rolled on to the track and were paced for several laps to get the fog off the speedway.
After running extra pace laps to blow the fog off, there was some concern about the cars having enough fuel to finish the full 58 scheduled laps, so the decision was made to cut the race to 40 laps to make sure everyone had enough fuel to finish. Divers were told over their raceciever that they would only be racing 40 laps before the green flag waved.
Doug Adkins and Kevin Morehouse brought the '09 American Heritage Classic to the green. Adkins jumped out to the early lead over Morehouse. The action was slowed with an early caution when a trio of cars tangled. On the restart, Adkins jumped out to the lead over Morehouse, Jarred Landers and Don Adams.
Landers slid by Morehouse on lap four to take second. Now in second, Landers set his eyes on front running Adkins. With Landers closing, disaster struck for front running Adkins, when coming down the backstretch on lap seven, he made contact with Harper as he was trying to lap him. Harper looped the 19H, bringing out the caution. Adkins was charged with the caution and sent to the tail.
The race went green for the next seven circuits with Landers at the point. The caution waved on lap fourteen for Daryl Charlier, who got into the tire in turn two. Leader Landers fired in turn four on the restart, quickly bringing the caution back out for firing too early. Landers would be penalized two positions. The new running order was now Don Adams, Randy Hall, Jarred Landers, Kevin Morehouse and Weasel Rhoades rounding out the top five.
The race went green for the next 17 laps with Adams at the point. A lap 31 caution slowed the action. On the restart, Adams jumped out to the lead with Landers, Morehouse and Kevin Weaver in tow. Landers chased front running Adams over the next eight laps. By lap 39, Adams had put the lap car of TJ Harper between himself and second running Landers. Landers made contact with the 19H of Harper on lap 39, sending him around to bring out the caution. The caution was charged to Landers.
On the restart, Adams held off Weaver and Morehouse over the final lap to pick up the American Heritage Classic win. Following Adams across the line were 24th starting Kevin Weaver, Kevin Morehouse, Weasel Rhoades and 21 starting Kenny Johnson, rounding out the top five.
Twenty six legend drivers signed into the pits, with hopes of claiming the $1,250 to win Legend World Cup. Tim Henry, Jason Rochelle and Justin Grim picked up heat race wins. Fog claimed the feature when FAST midwest series race director deemed conditions unsafe. A make up date hasn't been set yet.
In other action Bradford's Wayne Chinn picked up the late model feature win and Banbridge's Brent Smith took the crazy compact feature win.
Action returns to the 1/3 mile speed plant Saturday, August 15 with a Regular Race program consisting of late models, modifieds, legends, crazy compacts and bombers, plus an enduro race.
