JV Lady Dragons get buzzer beater win

It was a long road trip on Jan. 14 for Coach Ted Pennington and his West Union Lady Dragons JV girls basketball squad, but it turned out to be a worthwhile one for the group as they improved their record to 9-5 on the season with a thrilling 42-41 win over the host Lady Lions.

After losing an eight-point lead after three quarters, the Lady Dragons picked up that ninth “W” at the last possible moment, getting a buzzer-beating basket by Ashley Reed to claim the one-point victory.

“We showed a lot of heart to pull this win out,” commented Coach Pennington. “I am very proud of my girls.”

In the win, eight different players got into the scoring column for the Lady Dragons, led by a big night from Kaylee Welch, who poured in 18 points, including a pair of three-pointers. The rest of the West Union scoring was very balanced, with Kaley Daniels scoring 6 on a pair of treys, Reed 4, Sianna Mills 4, and Jaycee Baldwin 4.

The varsity contest at Fairfield was also a nail-biter, but this time with West Union coming out on the short end of a 45-43 score, dropping the varsity Lady Dragons to 6-9 on the season.

Both the West Union girls’s squads will be back in action on Thursday, Jan,. 21 when they will play host to the North Adams Lady Devils in Southern Hills Athletic Conference action.
